The reach of RELEVANT, the leading platform reaching Christian twenty- and thirtysomethings, has grown a lot in the last couple of years. Today we reach more than five million readers a month through all of our platforms, and readership of our print magazine—which we've been publishing since 2003—grew an unheard-of 31% last year. RELEVANT is known for covering the intersection of faith and culture, but is equally known for strong design. Currently, we are looking to hire a designer with creative vision to join our team and lead a new era for the print magazine.
The designer position will largely focus on the print magazine, designing layouts, typography and graphics to bring our content to life, but will also be involved in creating impactful content experiences on digital platforms as well. We're looking for someone who has a love for print, type, photography and detail. We're an indie media company creating on a variety of platforms, but it all starts with our magazine. Having a clear brand voice and consistent multi-platform style starts with strong typography and layouts in print, and flows from there.
The ideal candidate has experience with editorial design and a strong portfolio. They are snobby about type. They also have a great eye for photography, since impactful imagery drives so much of a magazine experience. Their aesthetic is indie and modern. Our ideal candidate is an idea person, someone with great taste, bold vision and the know-how to pull it off.
This is a highly collaborative in-house position that works with the senior art director, as well as our publisher, to ideate and create compelling content that will connect with our audience. The ideal candidate is our target reader. They know what makes RELEVANT unique, and have vision to help take the brand to the next level.
The primary focus of the job will be designing articles, layouts and graphics for RELEVANT magazine. Other projects will include designing high-level content experiences for our digital platforms, like tablets, the web, Apple News app, Facebook Instant Articles and more. The magazine industry is evolving rapidly, and this position will be creatively on the front end of new content innovations. Other projects will include designing marketing campaigns and other brand projects.
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of professional design experience. [This is not an entry-level position.]
- Personal knowledge of RELEVANT's products, market, audience, mission and voice.
- Expert knowledge of the Adobe Cloud creative suite, primarily Photoshop and InDesign.
- Strong typography and branding experience.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Motion graphics experience is a plus.
