Managing Editor, Makr

Equipping leaders shaping the future of the Church, Makr is a new resource from the team behind RELEVANT (the market leader reaching the Christian college-to-30s audience). Launching in January 2020, Makr will inspire and equip the next generation of Christian leaders, influencers and pastors through a quarterly magazine, weekly digital edition and podcasts. This generation is entrepreneurial and optimistic, and Makr will inspire and equip emerging leaders with compelling interviews, practical insights and wisdom from a wide range of Christian world-changers.

The ideal candidate is an experienced and creative leader who can develop an innovative, best-in-class content strategy for the quarterly magazine, website and podcasts. The managing editor will be a main driver of the brand's voice, and, as such, must possess a strong editorial perspective and a knack for developing insightful, smart, compelling content that fulfills the brand’s mission to challenge, mentor and equip emerging leaders.

Qualified candidates have ideally worked in church and business settings, led teams, and truly understand the need and opportunity for a platform like Makr. The ideal candidate must have strong writing and editing skills and a rolodex of relationships in the industry.

Makr will wrestle with hard questions, but won’t be cynical. It will be witty, inspirational and creative. It will be passionately about faith, and how that informs our approach to business and church leadership. Makr will help harness the potential of this generation to change the world. 

The ideal candidate is insightful, loves writing, but is equally comfortable conducting interviews and letting their personality shine on our multimedia platforms. They are passionate about what Makr (and RELEVANT) is passionate about, and gets the unique combination of wit, smarts, vision, passion and taste that make our brands unique.

Want us to be honest? One of the first things we're going to do is look at applicants' Twitter feeds. That will tell us a lot about your voice, what you're into and how in touch you are. We want someone who has a unique perspective, personality and great taste. We want someone for whom this content scope is a natural fit.  

This is a highly collaborative in-house position that works with the content director, publisher and multimedia producers to ideate and create weekly website content, as well as lead a bulk of the quarterly magazine and contribute to multimedia (like podcasts). Expertise in web analytics (to see what's connecting), headline writing, and Makr’s mission and voice is vital. A minimum of 1 year post-college professional editorial experience is required. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee weekly content content for Makr’s website, ensuring that the voice and taste reflects the expertise, mission and wit of the Makr brand and the content is connecting effectively

  • Assign, develop, write and edit features and front matter for the quarterly magazine

  • Establish a strong, conversational, smart voice for our overall brand

  • Work with social media team to develop social-first editorial programming

  • Work with the audience marketing team to establish actionable strategy that marries smart, sophisticated coverage with traffic and social growth metrics

  • Create content for RELEVANT as needed

  • Actively recruit great writers—both emerging and established—to write for the web and magazine

  • Regularly conduct interviews for our podcasts

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A strong sense of editorial voice and ability to write and edit smart, conversational copy in a flash

  • Experience working in a leadership role, both in business and the Church

  • Experience writing and editing top-tier daily content for a fast-paced website

  • Keen awareness of the millennial digital landscape, from established media brands and new editorial sites to social media stars and emerging platforms

  • Strong interviewer

  • Feature editing experience

  • A network of skilled and subject-appropriate go-to writers

  • Analytical skills and a strong understanding of how to track and respond to data in real time

  • Experience balancing brand excellence with measurable daily, monthly, and quarterly KPIs

  • Deep knowledge of AP style

  • Personal knowledge of RELEVANT's products, market, purpose and audience.

  • Experience with Adobe InDesign

  • Flexibility, adaptability and a sense of humor in an environment where rules are always changing and processes are constantly being revised
